Pro Football Hall of Fame presents Ken Stabler’s ring

More than seven years after Ken Stabler’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Ring of Excellence given to the players enshrined in the football shrine was presented to the quarterback’s family on Sunday night.

In a ceremony held before the Las Vegas Raiders’ NFL game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Jim Porter, the president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Raiders owner Mark Davis made the presentation to Stabler’s family.

Stabler played 10 seasons with the Raiders when the franchise was in Oakland and owned by Al Davis, Mark Davis’ father. Several of Stabler’s former Raiders teammates attended Sunday night’s presentation, including fellow Hall of Famers Fred Biletnikoff and Jim Otto.

Stabler’s bust from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, also was brought to the presentation.

Stabler was posthumously enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 7, 2016. He had died on July 8, 2015, about seven months before he was chosen for induction.

At the time, the Pro Football Hall of Fame did not present rings or gold jackets to inductees who were enshrined posthumously. That policy changed in November, and the shift included retroactive presentations, too.

Stabler’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame came almost 32 years after his final game on Oct. 21, 1984. Before becoming a Super Bowl champion and the NFL’s Most Valuable Player for the 1974 season, Stabler starred at Foley High School and Alabama.
